The Marketing & Communications Coordinator will be responsible for designing, managing, and implementing Synapse’s overall Marketing & Communications plan along with the CEO and Synapse staff. Additionally, this role will be responsible for organizing and managing Synapse’s Social media/web presence & Synapse-led and/or partnered events. This role will work closely with Marketing & Communications counterparts at partner organizations; such as PEI BioAlliance, Emergence, Greater Charlottetown Chamber of Commerce, Springboard Atlantic, Innovation PEI, and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, as well as the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) to ensure coordinated and consistent messaging.

The ideal candidate will be highly focused and results oriented with a proven track record in supporting complex, dead-line driven projects within demanding time frames; able to identify priorities and resolve issues in initial stages; and have effective analytical and problem resolution abilities. The successful candidate will excel at preparing marketing materials, presentations, and hosting events. Exceptional written and oral communication skills and professional demeanor are a necessity. The candidate must also be able to handle confidential correspondence and documentation and treat with the utmost sensitivity. The role will be integral to the Synapse team but with independent duties and as such requires a team player with the ability to work independently with little supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education must include at minimum the completion of a Bachelor’s degree or College diploma in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field. A minimum of 2 years experience as a communications professional supporting a fast-paced environment, dealing with complex issues, and managing conflicting priorities is required. Experience in media relations, marketing & corporate communications, social media/digital content writing, and developing + launching marketing & communication plans, are highly desired. Experience working within a university environment would be considered a benefit.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting/Writing:

  • Work with the CEO to prepare the overall Synapse Communication’s/Marketing Plan
  • Draft Power Point Presentations and/or reports for various internal and external stakeholders
  • Meet with researchers and/or industry partners to write and communicate “good news stories” and researcher profiles
  • Ensure messaging is consistent and accurate across all communications
  • Review contracts / funding proposals

Maintain and Update Synapse’s external communications through:

  • Ensure and draft timely and consistent messaging for distribution via: Synapse Website, LinkedIn, and Twitter feeds
  • Events calendar (Time.ly)
  • Synapse eNews (Mailchimp)
  • Up to date Client mailing list
  • Various local & regional media, as required

Work with Marketing and Communication counterparts at partner organizations such as:

  • UPEI
  • PEI BioAlliance
  • Chamber of Commerce
  • Springboard Atlantic
  • IPEI
  • ACOA

Plan & execute industry engagement events:

  • Present event ideas/plan to Synapse team
  • Be the point person for Synapse hosted and partnered events
  • Apply for appropriate funding
  • Recruit speakers and other resources as needed
  • Use social media and conventional media outlets for advertising
  • Invite guests via Event Bright or similar software
  • Request quotes on venue rentals & food
  • Facilitate speaker travel plans

Marketing UPEI technology and services:

  • Assist Synapse staff in preparing and distributing marketing materials highlighting UPEI technologies and services
  • Prepare and manage marketing campaigns for UPEI technologies and services
  • Assist Synapse’s technology transfer team in market evaluations of UPEI inventions and technologies

Financials:

  • Apply for funding
  • Manage budgets

Other Duties:

  • Meeting logistics
  • Visitor logistics / Campus tours
