Since 1996 Dr. Allan Johnston has been the founder and Managing General Partner of Nikko Synergy Ventures LLC and Synergy Ventures II LLC, venture capital management companies in Menlo Park, California that are focused on private equity investments in emerging medical technology companies. He is also founder and President of Synergy Partners International, a consulting company that arranges M&A, investment and strategic partnering relationships between US and Japan medical technology corporations. He currently serves on the Board of several private companies, including LightLab Imaging Inc., Breathe Technologies Inc., Bioabsorbable Therapeutics, Inc., InSite Medical, Inc. and RetroVascular, Inc.
From 1992 to 1996, Dr. Johnston was responsible for equity private placements for later-stage medical technology companies, with primary focus in the medical device and diagnostics industry at Berkeley International Capital Corporation, San Francisco, California. From 1987 to 1992 Dr. Johnston was Program Manager – Bioinstrumentation in the Center for Medical Technology at SRI International in Menlo Park, California, where he directed research, product development and technical consulting activities on behalf of major medical companies and government organizations such as NIH and DOE. From 1984 to 1987, Dr. Johnston was an NSERC Industrial Research Fellow at Domtar, Inc. Corporate Research Center in Montréal, Québec, focusing on Corrosion and Electrochemistry. His discovery of a novel corrosion inhibitor for reinforced concrete structures resulted in several patents and the establishment of a multinational company to commercialize the invention.
Dr. Johnston received an M.Sc and Ph.D in Bioinorganic Chemistry from the University of Guelph, Ontario in 1983, and was an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Victoria, B.C. He graduated from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, with a B.Sc in Chemistry in 1976.
